The New Covenant

Jeremiah 31:31-33,

31 “Behold, days are coming,” declares the LORD, “when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah,

32 not like the covenant which I made with their fathers in the day I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, My covenant which they broke, although I was a husband to them,” declares the LORD.

33 “But this is the covenant which I will make with the house of Israel after those days,” declares the LORD, “I will put My law within them and on their heart I will write it; and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.

Jeremiah is referring to the covenant of grace through faith. When this new covenant came into being on the Day of Pentecost after the resurrection of Jesus, the old covenant was done away with for when He said, “A new covenant,” He made the first obsolete. But whatever is becoming obsolete and growing old is ready to disappear, Hebrews 8:13.

This new covenant was made with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. However, in His infinite wisdom, God willed to invite Gentiles into this new covenant. To do this, He saves those Jews who are chosen and hardens the rest, “What then? That which Israel is seeking for, it has not obtained, but those who were chosen obtained it, and the rest were hardened,” Romans 11:7.

Cod gave those who were not chosen a spirit of stupor, eyes to see not and ears to hear not, down to this very day, Romans 11:8. This was and is a partial hardening,

Romans 11:25-32,

25 For I do not want you, brethren, to be uninformed of this mystery, lest you be wise in your own estimation, that a partial hardening has happened to Israel until the fulness of the Gentiles has come in;

26 and thus all Israel will be saved; just as it is written,
            “THE DELIVERER WILL COME FROM ZION,
            HE WILL REMOVE UNGODLINESS FROM JACOB.”

27 “AND THIS IS MY COVENANT WITH THEM,
            WHEN I TAKE AWAY THEIR SINS.”

28 From the standpoint of the gospel they are enemies for your sake, but from the standpoint of God’s choice they are beloved for the sake of the fathers;

29 for the gifts and the calling of God are irrevocable.

30 For just as you once were disobedient to God, but now have been shown mercy because of their disobedience

31 so these also now have been disobedient, in order that because of the mercy shown to you they also may now be shown mercy.

32 For God has shut up all in disobedience that He might show mercy to all.

Romans 9:25-26,

25 As He says also in Hosea,“I WILL CALL THOSE WHO WERE NOT MY PEOPLE, ‘MY PEOPLE,’ AND HER WHO WAS NOT BELOVED, ‘BELOVED.’”

26 “AND IT SHALL BE THAT IN THE PLACE WHERE IT WAS SAID TO THEM, ‘YOU ARE NOT MY PEOPLE,’ THERE THEY SHALL BE CALLED SONS OF THE LIVING GOD.”

Again, the new covenant was made with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, and here Paul mentions the Gentiles as being a part of it also. Both Jews and Gentiles who believe in Jesus are now in a covenant with God.

To be more precise, there is neither Jew nor Greek, there is neither slave nor free man, there is neither male nor female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus, Galatians 3:28.

The old covenant could not do away with sins and is now gone, Hebrews 8:13; 10:1-2. The new covenant is Christ in you, the hope of glory, who takes away all sins, Hebrews 10:1-2; 1 John 3:5-6.

Colossians 1:25-27,

25 Of this church I was made a minister according to the stewardship from God bestowed on me for your benefit, that I might fully carry out the preaching of the word of God,

26 that is, the mystery which has been hidden from the past ages and generations; but has now been manifested to His saints,

27 to whom God willed to make known what is the riches of the glory of this mystery among the Gentiles, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.

Please weigh everything I say on the scales of the word of God.
