To say we must die to self seems a little disrespectful to the Son of God, for self was crucified on the cross with Him, just as Paul said, “… knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin”, Romans 6:6, 7.
“Or do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus have been baptized into His death? Therefore we have been buried with Him through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life,” Romans 6:3, 4.
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and delivered Himself up for me. I do not nullify the grace of God; for if righteousness comes through the law, then Christ died needlessly,” Galatians 2:20, 21. Verse 21 suggests that, if we don’t accept the entire work of Jesus on the cross, we nullify the grace of God. For in Him we were circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead, Colossians 2:11, 12.
