If your family is hungry and you have no food and no means of getting any, what would you do? How would you handle the situation? Would you invoke the name of Jesus and command or claim food to come to you? Would you quote the promise that God will supply all your needs and bind the devil so food could come to you? Would you declare and decree that your family be provided food?
If you would do any of these things, you would be following Satan. You would be doing his will. Consider Jesus’ reaction when He was hungry, having gone without food for forty days and forty nights. He, being found in appearance as a man, knew that God would never tell a man to lift himself up to God’s level and command stones to become bread. He immediately said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live on bread alone, but by every word that proceeds out of the mouth of God,’” In other words, ‘I will do nothing until I hear from God.’
Then the devil took Jesus into the holy city; and he had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said to Him, “If you are the Son of God throw yourself down; for it is written, ‘He will give His angels charge concerning You’; and ‘On their hands they will bear You up, lest You strike Your foot against a stone.’”.
Notice how Satan uses Scriptures. He used a Scripture that contained a promise pertaining to Jesus, and tried to get Jesus to claim the promise by casting Himself down and proving that angels would take charge of Him. But what did Jesus say? He said,”On the other hand, it is written, ‘You shall not put the Lord your God to the test.’”
This is akin to people today who try to make the promises of God come true by claiming, declaring, decreeing, standing on the Word, etc. Satan has them thinking they must do something to receive a promise from God, rather that just believing Him. Those who walk in this manner are doing the will of Satan, for invariably they are putting God to the test, which is sin.
My friends, we must learn to walk humbly, casting our cares upon Jesus, knowing that He cares for us. We must not put the Lord our God to the test, but rather rest in His faithfulness. He remains faithful; for He cannot deny Himself.
