The Great Commission

Jesus told eleven men to make disciples of all the nations. When the Holy Spirit came on the Day of Pentecost the church, or body of Christ, was formed, and  Jesus gave the church five different ministries — apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers.

So what has been called The Great Commission has passed to the five ministries. Not every Christian is to preach the word of God. All who have not been called into one of the five ministries are to do whatever work they do unto God and not man. This is the will of God.

The only Great Commission I can find in the Bible is called The Greatest Commandments. We are all commissioned to keep them.

Mark 12:28-31,

28 One of the scribes came and heard them arguing, and recognizing that He had answered them well, asked Him, “What commandment is the foremost of all?”

 29 Jesus answered, “The foremost is, ‘HEAR, O ISRAEL! THE LORD OUR GOD IS ONE LORD;

30 AND YOU SHALL LOVE THE LORD YOUR GOD WITH ALL YOUR HEART, AND WITH ALL YOUR SOUL, AND WITH ALL YOUR MIND, AND WITH ALL YOUR STRENGTH.’

 31 “The second is this, ‘YOU SHALL LOVE YOUR NEIGHBOR AS YOURSELF.’

There is no other commandment greater than these.”

The commission to abide by these two commandments is found in three of the gospels, Matthew 22:37-40, Mark 12:29-31, and Luke 10:26-28.

Even though we have been released from the  Law, having died to that by which we were bound, so that we serve in newness of the Spirit and not in oldness of the letter, Romans 7:6, we do keep the Law via the love of God which has been poured out within our hearts through the Holy Spirit who was given to us, Romans 5:5. Though we are no longer under the Law and therefore are not required to keep it, we do keep it by walking in the love of our God through faith in His Son Jesus.
