“He Himself bore our sins in His body on the cross, that we might die to sin and live to righteousness; for by His stripes you were healed. For you were continually straying like sheep, but now you have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of your souls,” 1 Peter 2:24, 25.
These verses are akin to, “I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and delivered Himself up for me,” Galatians 2:20; and Galatians 5: 24, “Now those who belong to Christ Jesus have crucified the flesh with its passions and desires.”
According to the above Scriptures, we know that Jesus bore our sins in His body on the cross, not only that our sins could be forgiven, but also that we might die to sin and live to righteousness. And it is no longer we who live, but Christ who lives in us. And because we belong to Christ Jesus we have crucified our flesh with its passions and desires. And we do this by faith in what Jesus has done on our behalf. The life which we now live in the flesh we live by faith in the Son of God. For He bore our sins in His body on the cross that we might die to sin and live to righteousness.
“And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond approach — if indeed you continue in the faith firmly established and steadfast, and not moved away from the hope of the gospel that you have heard…,” Colossians 1:21-23.
Jesus has reconciled us in His fleshly body through His death on the cross, and we were born-again into a new man, the Son of God, and by His stripes we were healed. He bore our sins in His body, that is, the body of the last Adam, and we who were descendants of Adam were crucified with the last Adam, Jesus, and raised up with the risen Christ into newness of life, and now live to righteousness.
We descendants of Adam were buried with Jesus through baptism into death, in order that as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have become united with Him in the likeness of His death, certainly we shall be also in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old self was crucified with Him, that our body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin; for he who has died is freed from sin, Romans 6.
We have returned to the Shepherd and Guardian of our souls, having been healed by His wounds, and in Him we have been made complete. We now lay aside the old man, our sinful self, and put on the new man created in the likeness of the risen Christ. We do this daily by denying our self, taking up our cross, and following the risen Christ.
“For in Him all the fulness of Deity dwells in bodily form, and in Him we have been made complete, and He is the head over all rule and authority; and in Him we were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of the body of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ; having been buried with Him in baptism, in which we were also raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who raised Him from the dead,” Colossians 2:9-12.
Jesus is a complete and perfect Savior; believe in what He has accomplished. Our salvation is in Him, and only in Him; for by His stripes we were healed.
