The Peril of Unbelief

Hebrews 3:12-19,

12 Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God.

13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

14 For we have become partakers of Christ, if we hold fast the beginning of our assurance firm until the end

15 while it is said,
“TODAY IF YOU HEAR HIS VOICE,
DO NOT HARDEN YOUR HEARTS, AS WHEN THEY PROVOKED ME.”

16 For who provoked Him when they had heard? Indeed, did not all those who came out of Egypt led by Moses?

17 And with whom was He angry for forty years? Was it not with those who sinned, whose bodies fell in the wilderness?

18 And to whom did He swear that they should not enter His rest, but to those who were disobedient

19 And so we see that they were not able to enter because of unbelief.

Sin is lawlessness and lawlessness is disobedience. Jesus said, “Go and sin no more.” Christians today say it is not possible to live without sin. They say we will sin until we reach heaven. Why would Jesus tell people to sin no more if it were not possible? Did He not know the depravity of man? Of course, He did. He also knew the things impossible with men are possible with God, Luke 18:27. Most Christians today either don’t know or don’t believe this.

Who were those who provoked God in the wilderness for forty years? Was it not those who sinned, those who were disobedient? And why were they sinful and disobedient? It was because of their unbelief, Hebrews 3:19. They did not believe God could deliver them.

Hebrews 3:12-13,

12 Take care, brethren, lest there should be in any one of you an evil, unbelieving heart, in falling away from the living God.

13 But encourage one another day after day, as long as it is still called “Today,” lest any one of you be hardened by the deceitfulness of sin.

Mark 10:27,

27 Looking at them, Jesus said, “With people, it is impossible, but not with God; for all things are possible with God.”

Mark 9:23,

23 And Jesus said to him, “ ‘If you can!’ All things are possible to him who believes.”
