All Those Who Obey Him

We are saved by grace through faith. However, if that faith produces no works, it is dead and useless, and we are not saved.

Our faith in Jesus results in new life in Christ which sets us free from the law of sin and of death. The requirement of the Law is then fulfilled in us because we no longer walk by the flesh but by the Spirit.

The Spirit leads us to do the works God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. These are the works James is referring to when he said, “Show me your faith without the works, and I will show you my faith by my works.” If these works are missing, faith is dead.

Before Christ, we walked in the darkness of our sinful flesh, feeding its lusts and desires. After Christ, and in Him, we walk in the light of His righteousness and the holiness of the Spirit of God, doing the works He prepared for us.

We enter into the body of Christ by faith given to us by God. We are filled with His Spirit and, again, by faith, we then find ourselves to be new creatures seeking the will of God, rather than our own will. This results in works of righteousness and love.

Thus, without works, there is no salvation. Without works, what we thought was faith was no more than an illegitimate get-out-of-jail-free card. For Jesus did not become the source of eternal salvation to those who wish to remain lawless, but to all those who obey Him. (See Hebrews 5:9).
